Milan was having the same heat wave as Cornwall, only worse, because it was far from the coast. And it had tall, modern buildings trapping the air between them. And Cate had had to put on pants and a shirt with sleeves down to her elbows in order to meet with the museum officials.

Also, for some reason, the heavy, cloying air smelled like old Band-Aids. She wrinkled her nose. Some factory, maybe.

The museum officials had been overjoyed, and the balance of the money owed had been wired into her account (and then transferred to another account, just to be safe).

She had time to indulge in one chocolate gelato before she caught her flight. Gelato shops in Italy were a dime a dozen, but Cate knew how to find the right ones. You had to look at their banana gelato. If it was bright yellow, you went somewhere else, because they’d added coloring to it. Banana gelato should be yellowy-grey like proper banana interiors.

She was sitting at a café table by the door, in the air conditioning and out of the Band-Aid smell, so she saw him coming.

Her stomach twisted painfully, and her chocolate gelato turned sour on her tongue. What the hell was Daniel doing in Milan?

She knew the answer even as she thought it. There were no coincidences. Daniel was looking for her.

Long and lean, sleek muscles under a crisp pair of khakis and a pale blue button-down shirt. He looked like a male model posing as a casual professor.

She thought about running away. The gelateria had a back door. She’d checked.

Running away seemed foolish. For one thing, what was he going to do to her? He wouldn’t hurt her, and had nothing on her to turn her in for. Plus, if she ran, he’d just find her again.

Her emotions were too conflicted for her to tell how she felt about that.

So she scooped another plastic spoonful of gelato into her mouth, not tasting it, and let him find her. Even though it pissed her off that he was ruining her last chance at gelato for a good while.

“Hello, Cate,” he said as he slid onto the chair across from her, and the fact that he used her proper name almost made her drop her spoon.

“What now, Daniel?” she asked. “Are you stalking me? I don’t even know what my next job is, so good luck talking me out of it.”

He didn’t smile, and that worried her.

“I wanted to apologize,” he said.

Whatever she’d been expecting, it wasn’t that.

“I followed up with the museum,” he continued. “The vase really was stolen.”

“And I was really returning it,” she said. Anger bubbled. “Did you think I was lying?”

“I didn’t know what to think,” he said. He toyed with a paper napkin, folding it between his long, dark fingers. “It didn’t seem like your style.”

“I don’t think you really took the time to understand what my style is,” she said. “You wanted me to become, what, an antiques dealer? Go around to black market auctions and find missing art that way?” She made a snoring noise.
